Roseburg Forest Products

Roseburg’s exceptional products build on more than 80 years of innovative thinking, cutting-edge design, and high-tech manufacturing. With a strategic footprint of facilities that reaches from Oregon to South Carolina and from Ontario, Canada to Louisiana, Roseburg manufactures a comprehensive lineup of high-quality, sustainably harvested wood-based products.

The Challenge

Roseburg Forest Products, a company operating wood fired cogeneration boilers, had been experiencing problems with their boiler ID fans, when AirStream contacted them, in 2018, offering expertise to minimize fan wear.

The Dillard, OR facility prioritized a study of the No.2 Boiler ID fan, as the re-build cost to maintain the original, squirrel cage fan was over $35 000 annually, in the highly abrasive environment with sand carry-over.  In addition to this severe wear problem, this fan was operating below 50% efficiency.

The Upgrade Process

After collecting performance and operating data with mill engineers, AirStream prepared a technical proposal to supply a new, high-efficiency fan rotor with a capacity of 153,141 cfm with 12.57 “WG static pressure rise, allowing for extra pressure drop to accommodate boiler plugged conditions.

A heavy-duty fan and housing were custom engineered with replaceable scroll, to maximize wear life while matching existing foundation and duct flange locations.

The Results

The turnkey project was ordered, and the new fan was installed in November 2019.

Verification testing was conducted and confirmed the fan is operating 76% total efficiency, within 1% of its predicted performance flow, pressure and efficiency.

VFD input power savings were confirmed to be 80kW due to the efficiency increase of the new rotor, for which the facility received efficiency rebate from Oregon Utility.
